Version:
Existing law provides for a confidential marriage, whereby 2 unmarried people, not minors, who have been living together as spouses, may be married. Existing law requires a confidential marriage license to be issued by the county clerk, as specified, and then returned to the county clerk after the marriage has been solemnized. Existing law requires the county clerk to maintain a confidential marriage certificate as a permanent record that is not open to public inspection except upon order of the court issued upon a showing of good cause. Existing law requires the clerk to keep an original certificate of confidential marriage for one year from the date of filing, and authorizes the clerk, after one year, to reproduce the certificate and dispose of the original, as prescribed.

Existing law governs the dissolution of marriage and legal separation. Existing law prohibits a judgment of dissolution of marriage from being made final until 6 months have expired from the date of service of a copy of the summons and petition or the date of appearance of the respondent, whichever occurs first. Existing law authorizes a court to extend the 6-month period for good cause shown. Existing law also requires a court to enter a judgment dissolving a marriage when 6 months have expired from the date of the filing of a joint petition for summary dissolution, unless a revocation has been filed.

This bill would make technical, nonsubstantive changes to those provisions. additionally authorize the court to reduce or waive the 6-month period described above for good cause shown.
