This resolution recognizes the importance of World Cholangiocarcinoma Day, observed on February 15, 2024.

ANALYSIS: This resolution makes the following legislative findings:

An estimated 10,000 people in the United States develop bile duct cancer, also known as cholangiocarcinoma, each year, and the mortality rate has increased dramatically in the last decade.
Of the top eight deadliest cancers, seven are rare. Rare cancers have a five-year survival rate under 50 percent, and cholangiocarcinoma is a rare cancer with a five-year survival rate of approximately 20 percent. There is currently no cure for cholangiocarcinoma.
The Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation is the leading global resource in research, education, and public awareness.
Foundations, research and teaching hospitals, rare-cancer advocacy groups, and patient advocacy groups from around the globe have joined forces to recognize the third Thursday of February as World Cholangiocarcinoma Day.
The State of California is pleased to recognize and observe the third Thursday of February 2024, February 15, 2024, as World Cholangiocarcinoma Day in commemoration of all patients and caregivers impacted by this rare and lethal cancer.
Increased cholangiocarcinoma advocacy, awareness, research, and education will bring improved outcomes for patients in earlier detection and treatment and potential curative methods.

This resolution:

Recognizes the importance of World Cholangiocarinoma Day, observed on February 15, 2024.
Urges, respectfully, all citizens to support the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation.
States that the office of the Governor is committed to the continued support of research for treatment and a cure of cholangiocarcinoma.
Encourages all citizens to educate themselves about this disease as well as the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation and its role in our communities to improve the quality of life of patients and its work to find a cure by visiting curecca.org.
