  • Matt Haney

    Legislator

Thank you. Speaker and Members, I ask today that we adjourn in the memory of a San Francisco legend, Charlie Walker, better known as the Mayor of Bayview Hunters Point. Charlie was born on July 241933 in Vicksburg, Mississippi. He was a third of four children born to sharecropper parents and the great grandchild of formerly enslaved great grandparents.

  • Matt Haney

    Legislator

When Charlie was 10 years old, he participated in the great migration that brought tens of thousands of African Americans to California seeking a better life, and he and his family settled in San Francisco. Before Charlie was 18, he joined the US Air Force, and after his service, he returned to San Francisco and began to incorporate himself into the civil rights movement. As a young adult, Charlie noticed the exclusion of African Americans in San Francisco's construction industry.

  • Matt Haney

    Legislator

Charlie spoke out about these injustices, and this was also when he first bought a dump truck. In 1969. He organized several local black truckers to protest racial discrimination in this newly created Bay Area rapid transit project. As one of the largest public works projects in the region's history, Charlie desperately wanted to get a contract for his new truck. To secure a contract, and this became a legend of Charlie Walker. He decided to chain his truck to a local job site in protest.

  • Matt Haney

    Legislator

Thankfully, this act of civil disobedience made headlines and also led him to win numerous jobs on the project. Two years later, he obtained a contract from Standard Oil to supervise the cleanup at Stinton beach. In his later years, Charlie would write a book called America is still the place, chronicling his 30 day contract with Standard Oil. These two wins would become just the beginning of a remarkable life led by Charlie Walker.

  • Matt Haney

    Legislator

For over 60 years, he would remain on the front line fighting for minorityowned small businesses, human rights, children's rights, and the rights of those formerly incarcerated. On January 26, 2023 Charlie passed away peacefully at the age of 89. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Annette Walker, his daughters, Charlotte and Rudel, his son, Charles Walker Jr. And his granddaughter, Jafria, who he assisted in raising. He is also survived by his 10 other grandchildren and his 18 great grandchildren. To honor his legacy, I ask that we adjourn in his memory today. Thank you.

  • Stephanie Nguyen
