Please join me in a moment of reflection. Bob was once helping my dad load up the trunk with fresh fruits and vegetables that he had grown on our family farm and Fowler. We were going into Fresno for a family gathering, and dad was happy to share the gifts of his gardening.
- Patti Oshita

Mom came out and ordered the trunk to be emptied. They had to make room for ice chests full of food she prepared. The veggies can go another time. Bob and dad complied. Upon arriving, we began unloading the trunk. When mom asked, what? Where are the fruits and vegetables? Dad replied, you told us not to bring them.
- Patti Oshita

Mom said, yes, then I told you to bring what you can. Dad gently apologized and was scolded for not listening. With mom out of ear shot, Bob whispered, dad. She didn't say that. Dad whispered back, I know. In the house, Moms go to dad again for not listening.

Once that was over, we had the most delightful family gathering. Our admiration for my dad deepened even more that day. He has shown us that being right was not as important as the happiness of a harmonious gathering. What we do or choose not to do, what we say or choose not to say can make all the difference in creating a better day. With kindness and gratitude beyond words.

I am deeply grateful to the Consul General for his proactive role in strengthening the historic and meaningful relationship between California and Italy, especially between our sister cities, San Francisco and Assisi and South San Francisco and Lucca. In fact, my hometown, our great City of San Francisco is named in honor of St.

Thank you, Mr. Speaker and Members, it is my great honor to welcome representatives from the Casa program in connection with ACR 26 that will commemorate February 6, 2025 as CASA appreciation Day in California. I would like to thank my colleagues for joining me in authoring this very important resolution.
- Mia Bonta
Legislator
Court Appointed special advocates or CASAs are an important part of the child welfare and justice system. They are community volunteers who are screened, well trained and supported by staff at local Casa programs. A Casa volunteer is assigned by a juvenile court judge to a foster child.
- Mia Bonta
Legislator
Working one on one, they get to know that child, become familiar with their families and caregivers, and ultimately provide powerful in depth recommendations to judges about the child's best interest. They are often the child's strongest advocates. Most importantly to a child, a Casa is by their side during a traumatic, chaotic, challenging time.
- Mia Bonta
Legislator
A CASA is the only consistent adult in a foster child's life. Perhaps the most powerful thing a CASA does for a foster child is to simply listen, encourage and reassure. The CASA network includes about 500 staff Members employed by CASA programs statewide and another approximately 500 local Casa program Members every single day.
- Mia Bonta
Legislator
Local CASA programs and CASA volunteers provide effective and compassionate advocacy Colleagues. I ask you to consider whether or not you want to be a CASA. CASA has a strong, powerful program recruiting volunteers from across the states.
- Mia Bonta
Legislator
Just by being you, all you have to do is be you to change your life and the life of somebody who needs you. In the rear of the chamber, please welcome Sharon Lawrence, Chief Executive Officer for California Casa Association. Connie Wang, California Casa Association Carol Noreen, Executive Director, Sacramento CASA Kelly Donato, Associate Director for Sacramento CASA .
- Mia Bonta
Legislator
In the gallery there are also additional representatives from the nearby CASA programs, Sacramento Placer and Yolo Casa programs. Please join me in welcoming representatives of the California Court Appointed Special Advocates Association.

It's it, it's Members. We are going to be moving on to the business on the Daily File. Who's ready for another four and a half hour session today? If we have cooperation. I know we can shave five minutes off of that file. Item number one, ACR 20 by Assembly Member Macedo.

Person
The Clerk will read Assembly Concurrent Resolution 20 by Assembly Member Macedo Relative to Wear Red Day and American Heart Month.
- Josh Lowenthal
Legislator
Assemblymember Macedo, you are recognized.
- Alexandra Macedo
Legislator
Thank you, Mr. Speaker. Colleagues, I rise today to present ACR 20 recognizing American Heart Month. Today we raise awareness on the impact heart disease has on our population, especially among women. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States.
- Alexandra Macedo
Legislator
Every year, Cardiovascular diseases kill one in three women, claiming the life of approximately one woman every 80 seconds. That's a third of mothers, sisters and friends. What many of you do not know is that cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of maternal death and is known as the number one killer of new moms.
- Alexandra Macedo
Legislator
The national Go Red for Women movement has not only spread awareness, but has led to a decrease in women's death from heart disease by more than 30% since its inception. When the Majority Leader asked me to present this resolution, I was honored because I wear red for myself.
- Alexandra Macedo
Legislator
At the age of four, at a Fourth of July barbecue, I had what looked like a combination of a seizure and a heart attack. And it was one of the scariest moments of my life, which would only be followed by four years of testing and not getting answers until finally, at the age of 8, I was diagnosed with supraventricular tachycardia.
- Alexandra Macedo
Legislator
And I can spell it, but what would mean one surgery would turn into two and eventually would turn into seven heart surgeries. And every time I woke up, I was hopeful, but I was also grateful. I was grateful that I had parents that allowed me to live a very normal childhood.
- Alexandra Macedo
Legislator
I was very grateful to have a mother that showed me my power as a young woman to live a normal life, to go and pursue my dreams and never let my heart condition define who I was. Not all women are as blessed and lucky as I am.
- Alexandra Macedo
Legislator
So I ask you today, talk to your mothers, your sisters, your aunts, your friends, and tell them, please, health is wealth. Invest in yourself and make sure that we are prioritizing our health. We live in a very stressful world up here in Sacramento.
- Alexandra Macedo
Legislator
So to my ladies and gentlemen in this room, do not be a statistic, and let's be compassionate towards one another and have a heart. And thank you for wearing red and showing your support and increasing awareness regarding heart health.
