Please join me in a moment of reflection. There is an old saying. A smile costs nothing, but gives so much. Just thinking about this makes me smile.

  • Patti Oshita

    Person

Whenever we come to the Capitol, we are greeted with so many smiles from the attendants in the parking lot, our vigilant security staff, our many amazing Assembly support staff, and of course, our dedicated Members. With our smiles, we immediately brighten each other's day. But researchers have found that our smiles also directly benefit us.

  • Patti Oshita

    Person

Smiling can reduce our blood pressure, strengthen our immune system, lower our stress level, and even lengthen our lifespan. But most of all, our smile is a warm and welcoming hello. With our smiles, we make a connection of kindness. For smiling is a universal language that transcends all cultures. Smiling is an expression that is so beautifully human.

  • Patti Oshita

    Person

Smiling seems like such a simple thing, but the smile can be the seed to not only friendship, but love and even more. Mother Teresa would say that peace begins with a smile. World peace may seem an impossible dream, but as Mother Teresa felt, peace can begin with our smiles. Namwomi Dawasu. With kindness and gratitude beyond words.

Santa Monica has been a leader in protecting renters since residents voted to amend the city charter in April 1979 and create one of the strongest rent control laws in California.

  • Rick Chavez Zbur

    Legislator

This came as a response to a situation that is not hard to imagine today a serious housing shortage and rental rates that were quickly increasing beyond what tenants could afford.

  • Rick Chavez Zbur

    Legislator

The law created an elected Rent Control Board to carry out the goals laid out in the initiative ensuring the protection of renters while making sure that property owners are still able to make a fair return.

  • Rick Chavez Zbur

    Legislator

The five elected board Members and the division heads work hard to support both Santa Monica and the vision put forth in the landmark 1979 law that all residents benefit from strong, effective and well enforced renter protections.
