Hearings

Senate Standing Committee on Appropriations

January 18, 2024
  • Richard Roth

    Person

Oh. So we're going to be a six/zero?

  • Richard Roth

    Person

    Okay.

  • Committee Secretary

    Person

    Yeah.

  • Anthony Portantino

    Person

Okay. All right. I am going to call this meeting to order. So the Senate Appropriations Committee has been called to order. A reminder to everyone, today's hearing consists of items that are on suspense. All of the measures have already had a hearing. One of my pet peeves is people will say, when we dispense with the suspense file, how come we didn't have a hearing? How come--every single one of these bills has had a hearing.

  • Anthony Portantino

    Person

Every single one of these bills has had an opportunity for both proponents and opponents to speak for or against every single one of the bills. So please stop mischaracterizing what happens on suspense as a lack of hearing because the hearings already happened. As noted in the Daily File, it's a vote-only. Before we begin, I'll make a few comments.

  • Anthony Portantino

    Person

We will be moving quickly through the agenda, alphabetically by author's name. Play close attention because we will only be addressing the measures that will be up for a vote. If you don't hear a bill taken up, that means the bill is held under submission. I'll automatically announce author, measure, number, and provide a brief description of any amendments to the measure before we take the vote. And obviously, following the hearing, all the results and actions will be on the Senate Committee.

  • Anthony Portantino

    Person

And I believe even revised analysis will be put up of any bills that are amended. If it affects the fiscal, there'll be a revised analysis. We'll also--again, hosting the addendum analysis. So let's establish our quorum. Madam Secretary.

  • Committee Secretary

    Person

    [Roll Call].

  • Anthony Portantino

    Person

We have a quorum. We're missing two Members. So, Sergeants, if we could please, because it's much easier to do this. We're going to take a roll call on every vote because we only have a short agenda. And so I'll wait another 30 seconds for the other two Members if they come. Who wants an easy question? Aaron, you want an easy question? What famous U.S. festival hosted 350,000 people in 1969?

  • Unidentified Speaker

    Person

    Woodstock?

  • Anthony Portantino

    Person

Woodstock. I told you it was easy.

  • Brian Jones

    Legislator

Wasn't there another one that was actually bigger?

  • Anthony Portantino

    Person

I'm sure there have been festivals that have been bigger.

  • Steven Bradford

    Person

    Summer of Soul?

  • Brian Jones

  • Anthony Portantino

    Person

  • Brian Jones

    Legislator

    Peter Pan.

  • Anthony Portantino

    Person

Peter Pan. Very good. Bradford, what sport is dubbed the king of sports?

  • Steven Bradford

    Person

    King of sports? Horses?

  • Anthony Portantino

    Person

Well, they call that the sport of kings, but the king of sports is soccer, believe it or not.

  • Steven Bradford

    Person

No, that's wrong. Bad information from the audience. Riding a horse.

  • Anthony Portantino

    Person

Seyarto, what is the professional ice hockey team based in Toronto called?

  • Kelly Seyarto

    Legislator

    Toronto Maple Leafs.

  • Anthony Portantino

    Person

Toronto Maple Leafs. Good job. Wiener, who was the first gymnast to score perfect ten in the Olympics?

  • Scott Wiener

    Legislator

Yeah, I was going to say Mary Lou Retton, but--

  • Anthony Portantino

    Person

No. Nadia Comaneci. All right, we need one more. Who was the first woman driver to score points in a grand prix? 1975 Spanish Grand Prix. Who was the driver? Lella Lombardi.

  • Anthony Portantino

    Person
