Madam President, Members, this Bill is a companion measure to ACA 10, which this body passed just last week. This Bill will only become operative if ACA one is approved by voters in November.

Secretary, please read
- Roger Niello

May we always remember the sacrifices of our military Members and their families that they make for our freedom. I ask for an aye vote on ACR 126.
- Steven Glazer
Person
Senator Niello presenting for Assemblymember Patterson. Sir, the floor is yours.
- Roger Niello
Legislator
Thank you, Mister President.
- Roger Niello
Legislator
Members, Assembly Concurrent Resolution 126 honors the life and memory of Sergeant Nicole Gee. A constituent of mine and Assembly Member Patterson's from Roseville. This is being done by designating a portion of California Interstate 80 as the United States Marine Corps Sergeant Nicole G. Memorial highway.
- Roger Niello
Legislator
Now, the term rock star is used to describe a person of particular character, passion for life and accomplishments. Nicole Gee. Was very young, but she was a rock star. After graduating from Oakmont High School in Roseville in 2016, Nicole enlisted in the Marine Corps.
- Roger Niello
Legislator
In 2017, she was deployed to Afghanistan where she facilitated evacuation support for Afghan women and children. I need to read, if you will, some of her military awards and accomplishments. Keep in mind, this was a very young lady.
- Roger Niello
Legislator
Her military awards and accomplishments include the Purple Heart Combat Action Ribbon, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, NATO Medal, Expert rifle qualification, third award, becoming a black belt martial arts instructor, setting weightlifting records at Ahmad Al Jabr airbase, and achieving perfect scores in combat fitness tests.
- Roger Niello
Legislator
Unfortunately, in August of 2021, Nicole tragically lost her life in a suicide attack along with 12 other service Members. Just three weeks before her death, she had been promoted to Sargent due to her obvious outstanding work. Less than a week prior to the attack, Nicole made a social media post, holding and caring for an Afghan infant.
- Roger Niello
Legislator
I love my job. Nicole's actions, along with those of other servicemen and women involved in screening female evacuees, saved over 124,000 lives during America's largest airlift operation. We hold a special place in our hearts for Nicole, remembering the joy she brought to everyone she knew and the light she was to others worldwide.
- Roger Niello
Legislator
My friend and colleague, Assemblyman Patterson, made this presentation on the Assembly floor a week or two ago, and her whole family was there to witness it. It was quite moving, especially because they were there. Her legacy will live on, inspiring us to cherish the liberties we enjoy today.
- Steven Glazer
Person
Thank you, Senator Nilos. Senator Menjavar. Please give her attention, Members.
- Caroline Menjivar
Legislator
Thank you, Mister President. I do ask if we could take conversations off the floor. If you didn't know. The Marine Corps has the smallest percentage of women compared to every other branch. There are only 10% of women who joined the Marine Corps. The motto in the Marine Corps is, the few, the proud women.
- Caroline Menjivar
Legislator
We say, the fewer, the prouder. Because not a lot of us join. There's a group, a Facebook group of female Marines as old as 80 to as young as 18 years old. And we share all our experiences in this Facebook group, regardless if we met in person or not.
- Caroline Menjivar
Legislator
Probably a couple days before Sergeant Gee passed away, they posted a photo of her I escorting individuals from Kabul airport. And in that photo, they had her. They posted it. And unfortunately, the comments that were placed on there weren't positive. It was just an example of some of the treatment, the objectification of women in the military.
- Caroline Menjivar
Legislator
And this was just days before she passed away. And then we found out that she passed away. And in a couple of days, it went from objectification to she's a hero and so forth. As a female service Member, that change always happens. It's constantly there.
- Caroline Menjivar
Legislator
And it was even more frustrating for us female Marines when we saw that, because we know what that felt like. This group, we created a GoFundMe page and we contributed to this Fund to get all her family Members from across the United States to be able to attend her funeral.
- Caroline Menjivar
Legislator
The death of 24 year old Sergeant Nicole G really hit me at home because she was from California.
- Caroline Menjivar
Legislator
I'm so thankful for the Assembly Member to acknowledge our fallen hero that along on my way to Placerville to one of my favorite lakes, I will see her name memorialized in the State of California because she was a hero and she was so young when she was taken. You heard her last post of I love my job.
- Caroline Menjivar
Legislator
She had four years in the Marine Corps, and that's the feeling we all have when we put on that uniform.
- Caroline Menjivar
Legislator
When they passed away, her and the 12 other service Members, my district, well before I was a Senator, we held a special horse memorial ride where 13 of us did a horse ride with American flags draped over the horses for every single service Member that passed away, because it was literally the last day we were ending the war.
- Caroline Menjivar
Legislator
They had plans made, and the story is that her vehicle was in the parking lot of the barracks. And I saw my fellow marine sisters share posts on Facebook of the Car is still there in the parking lot, but she would never come back.
- Caroline Menjivar
Legislator
There was another female marine that perished in that tragedy as well, two out of the 13. So thank you so much for bringing this up. And I pulled it from consent because I thought my sister in arms deserved to have her story told on the Senate Floor. Respectfully asking for an aye vote.
- Steven Glazer
Person
Thank you. Senator Menjavar, any further discussion or debate on this resolution? Seeing none, it is eligible for a unanimous roll call. Seeing no objections. Excuse me, Senator Niello, would you like to close?
- Roger Niello
Legislator
Yes, I'd just like to point out that my friend and colleague from Rockland, Assemblyman Patterson is here with me as I was with him the other day. And thank you very much for the comments from my colleague from San Fernando Valley. Respectfully ask for an aye vote.
- Steven Glazer

He was later signed to play baseball for the then New York Giants and Later San Francisco Giants. He then played 21 seasons of baseball while also serving his country in the army in 1952 and 1953.

We're blessed to have him with us for 93 years, and I join my colleague. I hope you all join us in joining the Senate in his memory.
- Caroline Menjivar
Legislator
Senator Lair, you're recognized.
- John Laird
Legislator
Thank you, Madam President. I rise to join my colleagues in memory of Willie Mays. And for those of us that came of age when he was a player, he was just an integral part of our childhood.
- John Laird
Legislator
And I had the misfortune, since the Giants and the Dodgers came to the west coast when I was eight to have already committed to my father's Chicago Cubs. That made for a very difficult time attending games in San Francisco. And yet my dad took me to see Willie Mays in Seal Stadium.
- John Laird
Legislator
He took me to see him in Candlestick park. And for a Cubs fan, you might be ahead in part of the game. And you knew that announcer would intone the batter, number 24, Willie Mays. And Argus was cooked. It generally meant that the game would turn.
- John Laird
Legislator
But there was one time I got to be on the same side. And the Senator from San Mateo mentioned his all Star games while my dad and his best friend and his son, my best friend, scored four tickets to the 1961 All Star game at Candlestick park.
- John Laird
Legislator
This is where Candlestick was being shown off to the rest of the nation as a brand new park. And it's the game that was known because reliever Stu Miller was supposedly blown off the mound in the winds of the late innings at Candlestick park.
- John Laird
Legislator
And the great thing was, there were two players that day that had five bats for the national Maury wills from the Senator from Los Angeles, a hometown team, and Willie Mays. And it was a one run game.
- John Laird
Legislator
And Willie Mays knocked a run in and scored a run and arguably made the difference in the outcome of that game. Just who he was. He was everything else. That was said as a gentleman, a community Member, an unbelievable person. But he was just one of the best baseball players.
- John Laird
Legislator
And if you were going to a game where he played, you were never disappointed.

Thank you, Senator Laird, Senator Dodd, please bring your sports hero's name forward so that we may properly memorize him. Our last AIM of the day is going to be Senator Rubio.
- Susan Rubio
Legislator
Thank you, Madam President. Ladies and gentlemen of the Senate, today I rise to adjourn in memory of Daniel, otherwise known as Dan Spadaro, a resident of Rosemead who passed away at the age of 90 surrounded by family.
- Susan Rubio
Legislator
To the children of Rosemead and all over the Sangria Valley, Dan and his family brought so much joy during the holiday seasons, especially the December festivities were established because of him. He would have a tradition where he would decorate a castle. So it's known as Christmas Castle. For over 50 years, Dan decorated Christmas castle with different themes.
- Susan Rubio
Legislator
One year, it was the old woman who lived in a shoe. Another year, focusing on the merry go round, bringing joy and excitement to the community. When he started his tradition, Dan was a truck driver from Mattel.
- Susan Rubio
Legislator
He was able to gather all the extra toys that were left and share them with the children who needed it the most. He was known to some as Santa for the City of Rosemead.
- Susan Rubio
Legislator
Dan cared deeply for his community, and in return, the community came together and decorated his home when he could no longer physically do so himself. After his wife, misses Marie, passed away, the Rosemead Beautification Committee created a holiday decorating contest, and the grand prize winner would receive the Merry Spadaro Christmas Castle award.
- Susan Rubio
Legislator
This year, the City of Rosemead will be giving out again the same recognition, except that now it was named Dan and Marie Spadaro Christmas Castle award to honor both of them that did so much for Rosemead and so many families that needed toys during the holiday season. Please join me in a journey in memory of Dan Spadaro.
- Susan Rubio
Legislator
Thank you.
- Caroline Menjivar
Legislator
Thank you, Senator. Please bring Dan's name forward so that he may be properly memorialized. If there is no other business. Senator Grove, the desk is clear.
- Shannon Grove
