Before the reflection, Please join me in a moment of silence in remembering the 67 victims of last night's air tragedy in Washington D.C. please join me in a moment of reflection. There's a story about a well known 7th century monk named Shinran that I hold close to me for it reveals his humanness.

  • Patti Oshita

    Person

Shinran had reached a moment in his life when he was no longer sure what to do. I think we've all been there. Confused, he went to his teacher Honen and asked for guidance. Honen said to Shinran, whatever you do, live a life of kindness and gratitude.

  • Patti Oshita

    Person

If you can't do it as a monk, do it as a layman. If you can't do it as a layman, do it as a monk. Honan continued, if you can't live a life of kindness and gratitude with people, then do it alone. If you can't do it alone, then do it with people.

  • Patti Oshita

    Person

If you can't do it staying in one place, then move around and do it. If you can't do it moving around, then stay in one place. But most essentially live your life with kindness and gratitude. A monk and is remembered today for his genuine honesty and humility.

  • Patti Oshita

    Person

And although it was never his intent, after his death, over 800 years ago, a sect of Buddhism grew into the kindness and gratitude that remains today, the largest in Japan. When I find myself unsure of what to do, I have found this story continues to help ground me.

  • Patti Oshita

    Person

  • James Gallagher

    Legislator

When he was young, he and his family moved to California to start a new life. The California Dream. They arrived in Tehama County in Los Molinas, where Fred attended Tehama Elementary School and Los Molinas High School, and accomplished such feats as showing sheep for Future Farmers of America, becoming President of Block LM.

  • James Gallagher

    Legislator

And despite all of this, his proudest accomplishment from this time was playing as a quarterback for Las Mollenas Bulldogs. His son went on to play that same position, and his grandson currently protects the quarterback at center at Las Molenas High School. He never missed a game.

  • James Gallagher

    Legislator

After graduating from high school, Fred went on to serve his country in Vietnam. And during his time there, he earned a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star for getting himself and a fellow soldier to safety. After he returned, Fred went to Shasta College and then to Chico State.

  • James Gallagher

    Legislator

He met his wife, Jill in 1975, and they were married in 1977. Fred worked regularly at the Tehama County Public Works Department, but he often found other odd jobs to help support his family. He was a huge contributor to his community.

  • James Gallagher

    Legislator

In fact, many events, any event in Tehama County, I would find Fred and Jill giving back, trying to do the best to support especially young people in the community. And Fred always had a good joke and a good word of encouragement for me. I will truly miss him.

  • James Gallagher

    Legislator

He leaves behind his wife, Jill, his three children and six grandchildren. Fred will be remembered as a supportive husband, father, and a pillar of his community. Therefore, today I ask that this Assembly adjourn in memory of Fred Botts. Thank you.

  • James Gallagher

    Legislator

Thank you, Mr. Speaker and Members, I rise to adjourn today in memory of Arnold Hofert of Yuba City, who passed away on December 22nd at the age of 74. Arnold was born in Marysville, California, to Leo and Ella Hofer. He grew up on their ranch in Robbins, California, and it was there that his love of farming began.

  • James Gallagher

    Legislator

After graduating from Yuba City High School, he pursued his bachelor's in agriculture from Chico State. In addition to being a farmer, Arnold was always giving back to the community, serving on many boards, including the board of Craftsmen for Christ. Through this role, he transformed the lives of countless men.

  • James Gallagher

    Legislator

Arnold served as an elder at the North Valley Calvary Chapel for 20 years. This is a church that I grew up in. And afterwards he became a pastor and elder at the Bride Church. Arnold was pivotal in the founding of the Bride Church, graciously hosting their first gathering in his home.

  • James Gallagher

    Legislator

And I can tell you many times, Arnold was just someone who would pull you aside and give you, have a prayer for you, have a word to give you, to encourage you, to help you to walk that Christian walk.

  • James Gallagher

    Legislator

And I just always remember that about him and the way that he loved his family and the way that he loved his church community, and his greater community around him in Yuba Sutter. He is preceded in death by his amazing wife, Mandy, and his parents. He leaves behind three children and nine grandchildren.

  • James Gallagher

    Legislator

Arnold will be remembered as a humble and generous man whose family meant everything to him. His door was always open, and that's true so many that would come through that door so often, and they would find a welcome and hospitable home. And he was a safe space for many in the community.

  • James Gallagher

Therefore, today I ask that this Assembly adjourn in the memory of Arnold Hofert. Thank you.

  • Darshana Patel

    Legislator

Good morning, Mr. Speaker and Members. I rise to adjourn in memory of Lorraine Boyce, the former mayor of Escondido and a leader in San Diego County. Eight days ago, Escondido, and frankly, all of San Diego County lost a leader.

  • Darshana Patel

    Legislator

We lost someone who shaped North County into the community that it is today, improving thousands of lives through her vision and determination. Eight days ago, we lost Lorraine Boyce. Many remember her as Escondido's first female mayor, but her impact stretched far beyond that title alone.

  • Darshana Patel

    Legislator

She was the driving force behind critical initiatives, establishing a center to support working mothers, pioneering friends of Planned Parenthood, and laying the foundation for North County Transit. At every turn, Lorraine was not just present, she was indispensable.

  • Darshana Patel

    Legislator

Many of the people and families that Lorraine helped do not know her or her work, but they do know of the systems that help them, community centers that embrace them, and the city that they call home. All of this is thanks to Lorraine.

  • Darshana Patel

    Legislator

She's a key reminder that systemic change and community growth really can start with just one individual. And it starts with those whose courage comes from compassion and who empathizes with the community over individual advancement. Thank you, Lorraine, for being a pioneer in San Diego County.

  • Darshana Patel

    Legislator

You will be missed, not just by my community, but all of those around, and we will always treasure the positive impact that you made on our lives. Therefore, I ask that this session adjourn in memory of our dear Lorraine Boyce.

  • Josh Lowenthal
