Please join me in a moment of reflection. In retirement, I've been enjoying learning Japanese via Zoom. There is a common everyday greeting, ogenki desu ka. That is usually translated as how are you. My parents and grandparents used this phrase often. Ogenki desu ka. How are you? The positive response was, hai, genki desu. Thank you. I am fine.

Only in writing this phrase did I understand its deeper meaning. Gen means original, and Ki means spirit. Used in greeting, the deeper meaning is asking, are we in touch with our original spirit, our true selves? Are we in touch with our humanity? To be mentally, physically, and spiritually well, we must be in touch with our original spirit.

We must be in touch with our humanity. There are moments when events of the world around me and within me leave me feeling far from well. At such times, this phrase comes to mind, and I wish I could ask the whole world. Ogenki desu ka? How are we doing? Are we in touch with our original spirit? Are we in touch with our humanity? It is being in touch with our shared humanity that we can begin to live gratefully with caring and kindness. Let us live with wisdom and kindness beyond words.
