We have a quorum. We have a consent agenda. Please note, SB 417, Cabaldon, has been added to today's referral list and is being referred to Housing and Community Development Committee. Is there a motion on the remainder—is there a motion?

  • Tom Lackey

    Legislator

I have a comment. I respectfully request to remove item 17 from the consent agenda so that they may be barred on separately.

  • Blanca Pacheco

    Legislator

Thank you. Is there a motion on the remainder of the consent agenda? Second? Secretary, please call the roll.

    Legislator

Motion passes. And now we will move on to item number 19, House Resolution 97, and Assemblymember Schultz is here to present. You may proceed when you are ready.

  • Nick Schultz

    Legislator

Oh, sure. Thank you very much, madam chair and members. I'm honored to present—to represent the largest population of Armenians outside of Armenia. And next week in my district and around the world, we will be marking a solemn day. It began in 04/24/1915, and for eight long horrific years, the Armenian nation was subjected, was subjected to a systematic and premeditated genocide at the hands of the Ottoman Turkish Empire and the Republic of Turkey.

  • Nick Schultz

    Legislator

One point million—1,500,000 Armenian lives were lost. Hundreds of thousands of Assyrians, Greeks, and other Christians perished in one of the most atrocious violations of human rights in history. HR 97 is our annual resolution recognizing the Armenian Genocide and all who are lost during this dark chapter of our shared history. And with that today, I respectfully request your aye vote so that this can move to the floor for a full vote.

  • Blanca Pacheco

    Legislator

Thank you. And do we have any witnesses here in support? Seeing none. Are there any witnesses present in opposition? Seeing none. Are any, there are any questions or comments from committee members?

  • Blanca Pacheco

    Legislator

    Assemblymember Ahrens.

  • Patrick Ahrens

    Legislator

Thank, thank you, madam chair. I wanna thank the, the member from Burbank for bringing up this important recognition, and I think it's critically important that the body reaffirms the atrocities that happened against the Armenian people and the genocide that occurred. And I wanna commend the, the author for bringing this forward and wanna show deep gratitude that we continue to talk about what has happened and that we don't erase history. So, proud to support this. Thank you.

  • Blanca Pacheco

    Legislator

    Any other member?

  • Mark Gonzalez

    Legislator

Oh, I was just gonna say thank you to the author. I represent this city of Montebello where we have the Armenian Genocide Monument that we just added to the list, like, we believe last year of California State historical landmarks, and I just wanted to thank you for bringing this forward.

  • Nick Schultz

    Legislator

    Thank you.
