Thank you very much, Madam Speaker and Members. We ask that all Members rise to bring attention to the tragedy that took place this past Monday, March 27, at Covenant School in Nashville, Tennessee. The shooting resulted in six deaths. These victims include staff and three, excuse me, three nine year old children. I am saddened that we still live in a country where these shootings are still taking place.

We stand together today to mourn the life of those who've lost their lives due to this horrific shooting that took place on Monday. Let me read the names. Michael Hill, 61 years of age. Katherine Koonce, 60. Cynthia Peak, 61. Hallie Scruggs, nine years old. Evelyn Dieckhaus, nine years old. And William Kinney, nine years old. Members, I ask that we stand in a moment of silence for those who've lost their lives on Monday in Nashville, Tennessee. Thank you.

Thank you, Madam Chair. Good morning, Members. I am here to present AB 957, a bill that would require a court to consider a parent's affirmation of the child's identity, gender identity, when determining the best interest of a child. AB 957 would also require a court to strongly consider that affirming the gender identity of a minor is in the best interest of the child if a non-consenting parent objects to a name changed to confirm to the minor's gender identity.

I understand many of my colleagues are absent today, but I'm bringing up this bill today in particular, because tomorrow, March 31, is International Transgender Day of Visibility. This is an important week, and I want to take the time to highlight the Legislature's affirmation that we see this community and will fight for equality for all transgender people.

Members, currently, when parents do not agree on affirming a TGI, which stands for transgender, gender diverse, intersex, when parents do not agree on affirming a TGI child's gender identity, the family code does not specify how a judge should determine the best interest of a TGI child. TGI youth are at a higher risk of depression, mental health crisis, self harm, and suicide than their cis peers. Having at least one adult in a child's life who affirms their gender identity decreases their chance of attempting suicide significantly.

82% of transgender individuals experience suicide ideation, and 40% make a suicide attempt in their lifetime. Research demonstrates that a family acceptance of LGBTQ plus youth is a crucial protective factor in combating depression and substance abuse and can dramatically reduce rates of suicide by half. Furthermore, many TGI children are not safe in their own homes because of non-affirming or abusive caretakers. This leads many TGI youth to run away from home, leaving them vulnerable to housing instability, exploitation, and further abuse.

Well rounded social support from friends and family members is strongly associated with positive mental development, physical health, and overall well being. AB 957 would center the health and welfare of a TGI youth by acknowledging that their affirming gender identity is in their best interest. It would allow them to be seen in our court system. Please join me in supporting this bill and demonstrating the Assembly's support for this important issue. Thank you.

Ms. Speaker and colleagues, I am proud to support AB 957 and thank my dear friend from Suisun City for her work on this important issue. Everyone should be able to have a name that reflects their gender identity and a home that allows them to feel comfortable in their own skin. This bill is an important step to protecting transgender, gender diverse, and intersex youth. I ask for your aye vote.

Thank you. I want to rise today in support of AB 957 and I want to thank the author and the co-authors for this very important bill. As one of the Members of this body who has TGI members, family members, in my family, this is a really important bill. And we know from medical experts and experts that the thing that is most important to care for these kids is making sure that we support them and that we affirm them.

This bill is an important tool that gives parents the tools they need to do exactly what we need to do for these kids, support them, affirm them, and love them. I ask for an aye vote. Thank you.

Thank you, Madam Speaker and Members, I rise in support of AB 957, and thank the Member from Suisun City for your leadership. This is a very scary, dangerous time for transgender youth. We're seeing all over the country and, sadly, all over our state, attacks on young people, attacks on their identity, attacks on them just being able to live as who they are. And here in California, we know that the best way that we can provide for all of our young people is through compassion.

It's through affirmation, and it's through support. And this bill, I think, is such an important statement for who we are, and I have no doubt that it will save lives. I represent the Transgender Cultural District in San Francisco, and what we've seen is, when we embrace people's identity, especially young people, that their mental health, their physical health, their emotional health improves and has support as well. I very strongly support this bill and encourage an aye vote. Thank you.

Thank you, Madam Speaker and Members. Today I rise in support for AB 957, and thank my colleague from Suisun City, my former seatmate, for bringing this bill up. Unfortunately, this bill deals with a scenario that is all too common for our community. Our families do not often accept us when we are brave enough and vulnerable enough to come out and be our true, authentic selves.

This is true especially for our trans siblings, who have recently faced an increase of discrimination and violence for no other reason than being themselves. I am proud to see this bill on the Assembly floor today. I want to thank the author as an ally and as someone in our family, in our community, for bringing forth a piece of this legislation that actually helps protect the rights and dignity of transgender individuals.

This has not been the case in other legislative bodies, as we've seen across our country, where legislation is targeting, discriminating against our transgender siblings. And we need to stand up here in California. Let me be clear. This bill is essential to California values. Dignity, diversity, acceptance, and willingness to protect the rights of all.

As a member of the California LGBTQ Caucus, I want our transgender siblings to know we stand with you every single day, and we will make sure that in the Legislature, you hear it loudly and clearly from Sacramento. Please know that we believe that our transgender siblings' rights are going to be protected because they are human rights. And so, again, thank you to our colleague, and I hope you will join us in supporting AB 957.

And I want to thank Assembly Member Wilson for bringing this forward. I had a cousin that's transgender. Unfortunately, I'm using the word "had." As an African American in an African American community growing up, we weren't the most accepting. Matter of fact, we were probably hostile to transgender people when I was growing up and when we were kids. And some of the things that we used to do were horrific, even just the verbal things we said to my cousin.

My cousin eventually was so distraught because he couldn't come to family functions, he wasn't really accepted, that he got hooked on drugs. He eventually died in San Francisco of a drug overdose, homeless, alone. It took about three months before the coroner's office was able to find my aunt and his mother so that we could bury him. That's my cousin. He should have not gone through that.

And the torture he went through as a kid will always burn in my heart, will always burn in my memory, and I wish I had done more. And so I'm so grateful to you for doing this moving forward that we're able to do something for individuals that are in that dilemma, especially in our community, especially in the black community, we got to do more. So thank you, Assembly Member Wilson.

Thank you, Madam Speaker. Members, this is a very difficult and touchy subject, and I truly appreciate the author's really trying to wrap her arms and her mind around what's happening with our transgendered youth. It's very touchy. And I think for parents because I have friends and family that have gone through this and have gone through the transitioning process. And these are those things that a lot of us don't really talk about because we don't really necessarily even know how to talk about them.

My one concern and the reason why I'll be laying off today and that I trust the author will be looking at moving forward, is we have to be very careful that we're not splitting parents who are trying to work through this together to split them apart on decisions. So I'm looking forward to seeing some of that being addressed in the future because we need to make sure that we're not dividing families during these touchy times. Thank you.

Thank you, Madam Speaker. Thank you to all of my fellow colleagues across California who stood up to speak on this particular issue and ensure that transgender youth, adults, individuals are seen by the California Legislature. That is so important. At the very core of who we are, we all desire, no matter who we are, to be seen by people. And with your aye vote, you are doing that today.

And I am so thankful to my colleague who sits next to me for speaking out, because that is part of the democratic process. Sometimes it looks messy. Sometimes we don't agree, but somehow, some way, we can get to where we need to do to make sure that every single Californian, no matter who they are, are taken care of. And that's what this bill does today.

It allows our court system to see TGI individuals, children, for who they are and allow that to be taken into consideration as a part of their discretionary role as a judge, as a part of their toolkit. And that's what this does. And so with that, I respectfully ask for your aye vote.

Thank you, Mr. Speaker. I'd like to recognize some of my constituents and members from the first congregational church of Long Beach in the gallery today. Would you please stand up? They are here to receive the governor's 2022 Historic Preservation Award for the very incredible work that they have done to preserve their beautiful church in downtown Long Beach. I can say as a member of the Jewish community in Long Beach, we have very fond connection with the people of the first congregational church.

As a matter of fact, during high holiday services growing up, we were not able to meet in our temple because we didn't have enough people. And of course, the first congregational church very warmly welcomed us for high holiday services. So I personally have such fond memories. Originally built in 1914, this iconic building and congregation continues to bring people together, regardless of religion, sexual orientation, race, class or gender. To fully celebrate the intersection of arts and justice.

I want to congratulate them for this prestigious award and thank them for their tireless dedication to historic preservation. Please join me, members, in congratulating them on this great award.

Thank you. Speaker and members, thank you for the opportunity to present House Resolution 23 commemorating Cesar Chavez Day on behalf of the California Latino Legislative Caucus. 96 years ago, Cesar Chavez was born. His impact on civil rights, community organizing, and the labor movement across the United States and the globe has been invaluable. In El Dia De Cesar Chavez, celebramos el legado de un campion de la justicia social. Y reconosemos la determincion de aquellos que continuan realizando su trabajo hoy en dia. It is an honor to introduce HR 23.

As a daughter of farm workers and a Central Valley native. I worked alongside my parents in the Central Valley fields throughout my childhood and my family, and I recognized the legacy and opportunities that Cesar Chavez created not only for my family, but for others across this nation. Cesar Chavez is one of the country's most influential civil rights and labor movement leaders. In the face of adversity and injustice, Chavez fought against discrimination and blame inhumane practices.

His rallying cry of "Si Se Puede" still rings true and serves as an incredible reminder of the strength in each of us and our entire Latino community when we join together and make our voices heard. On Cesar Chavez birthday and a holiday named in his honor, which was made happen on this floor, the Latino caucus celebrates his legacy. It encourages others, inspired by his leadership, to continue to build on the foundation he has laid before all of us.

Working alongside a number of different races and ethnicities, Chavez learned stories of other cultures and learned that the strength of a democracy comes from all of our cultures and backgrounds, working together. Cesar Chavez led countless peaceful strikes, boycotts and marches and gained respect from some of our greatest political and civil rights leaders, including Martin Luther King, Jr and Robert Kennedy. In 1962, Chavez and Dolores Huerta organized the Farm Workers Association, which would later become the United Farm Workers, the UFW.

Together, they advanced La Causa into a national movement. Chavez and USW led a 10,000 person march from Delano to Sacramento and organized a great boycott, ultimately leading to farm workers dignity, formally recognized by growers through the first farm workers contracts in California history. Last year, this body, and with the hard work of the United Farm Workers, fought to get AB 2183 signed to expand farm worker union rights and advance workplace safety.

Pero la lucha sigue. Let us all learn from Cesar Chavez's life and mission of nonviolence, social justice, and selfless service to others. Si se puede, y que viva Cesar Chavez. So, in closing, I respectfully ask for your aye vote on HR 23.

Thank you, Madam Speaker, I rise on behalf of the California Legislative LGBTQ caucus in support of HR 23. While Cesar Chavez is primarily known for his work as a civil rights and labor leader and founder of United Farm Workers, he believed in social justice and fighting for the rights of all marginalized communities. He was an ally of the LGBTQ plus community. In 1987, Chavez attended and spoke at the second National March on Washington for gay and lesbian Rights.

Today, the United Farm Workers continue the fight and many of his civil rights colleagues like Dolores Huerta, continues that as a member of the board of Equality California and as a strong advocate for the LGBTQ plus civil rights and social justice, Helen Chavez, his wife, once said, quote, "my husband spent his life fighting for dignity for all people."

Cesar was one of the first civil rights leaders to speak out for gays and lesbians because he understood that you can't demand equality for your own people while tolerating discrimination against anyone else. The efforts of Cesar Chavez are a reminder that together we can break down barriers, for it is only in unity that we may work towards equity and inclusion for all people. On behalf of the members of the LGBTQ Legislative caucus, I hope you will join us today in supporting HR 23. Thank you.

Thank you, Madam Speaker, today I rise on behalf of the California Native American Legislative Caucus to join in celebrating the life, achievements, and example of Caesar Chavez. His paternal grandmother was an Indian from the mexican State of Chihuahua. During the early 1880s, family stories says his grandparents fled Mexico for Arizona to avoid being forced to join a posse hunting and killing Apache Indians. Caesar honored and cherished his grandmother's native roots.

When he passed away of natural causes in April of 1993, he was holding a book of Native American art. We celebrate his commitment to service, to justice, to learning and nonviolence, and the fierce pride he took in his roots. He respected the value of collaboration and knew what a united group of people could accomplish. Caesar was successful because of his willingness to work with others and the respect he gave to all.

From the Filipino workers he worked with to form the first farm worker union, to a multi faith group of leaders who gave their support to his cause, to fellow labor leaders in cities across the United States and the world. His work inspired hundreds and hundreds of people from all ages and walks of life to believe in themselves, to seek acknowledgment of their rights to decent working conditions such as water, shade, and toilets and the elimination of the shorthandled hole that left many crippled.

In his 1984 speech to the San Francisco Commonwealth Club, he reminded us why we must all remember that service to others, respect towards others, pushes the arc of justice forward. And I quote, once social change begins, it cannot be reversed. You cannot uneducate the person who has learned to read. You cannot humiliate the person who feels pride. And you cannot oppress the people who are not afraid anymore. I ask for your support of HR 23.

Good morning, Madam Speaker. I rise on behalf of the Asian American Pacific island caucus in support of Cesar Chavez Day. What an amazing day it is today. Delano is now at the table. They marched from my hometown of Delano to Sacramento and they were denied to be seen by the Governor. He refused to leave this Ivory Tower and meet these people that had marched all the way from Delano to Sacramento. Now I proudly represent Delano as my hometown. We are now at the table.

The work that was done with Cesar Chavez, along with Larry Itlong, Dolores Huerta, Esther Monsano, these were the people of my hometown. They marched recently and I was a Doctor in the City of Delano. There was an elderly man at that time that was marching in the over 100 degree weather. He passed out and he came to my clinic. And I asked him, I said, sir, as your Doctor, happy National Doctor's Day, by the way. As your Doctor, I am concerned about your health.

Marching in this extreme temperature. And you know what he told me? Dr. Bains? I'll do it again. This is the voice of Delano. In the State of California, there was one city that not just spoke, but rose altogether. They were not alone. They rose together to bring awareness to what was happening. Equal rights, equal pay, access to health care. And the struggle is not over. I proudly rise today in support and ask for your. I vote for Cesar Chavez Day.

Good morning, Mr. Speaker and members. Today I rise in support of HR 23 by Assembly Member Soria of serving March 31 as Cesar Chavez's birthday and as a day of public service. As I stand here on the assembly floor today, I am filled with deep sense of gratitude and honor to commemorate the life of legacy of El Gran Cesar Chavez.

As an immigrant who came to this country at the age of 15, I never imagined ,nunca me imagine, that I would one day become a proud citizen of this great nation, raise a beautiful family, speak English and let alone serve as an Assembly Member. Proudly representing the 39th district of California. But here I am, aqui estoy, standing before you today. A testament to the American dream, El Sueno Americano, that Cesar Chavez worked hard to uphold.

Cesar Chavez was a visionary, a tireless advocate for farm workers, and a champion for social justice. He fought against discrimination and inequality, and his unwavering commitment to his cause inspired millions worldwide. As we commemorate Cesar Chavez on this day, we must remember that his legacy is not just a historical footnote, it is a call to action, es un compromiso. We must renew our commitment to the values he held dear. Justice, equality and opportunity. No es facil, it's not easy. It takes greed, determination, relentless spirit.

But as Cesar Chavez once said, "we cannot seek achievement for ourselves and forget about progress and prosperity for our community." Our ambitions must be broad enough to include the aspirations and needs of others for their sakes in our own. We stand on the shoulders like Cesar Chavez, who paved the way for us to have a voice and make a difference for all. A que ser escuchar nuestra voz. As we remember his legacy, let us work together to build a California that reflects these values.

A state where todos, everyone has a chance to succeed, no matter their background or circumstances. Let us stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters fighting for the rights and dignity such as Cesar Chavez did. And let us never forget that our struggles and successes are intertwined. We are in this together. Recurda la union hace la fuerza. Thank you, Cesar Chavez, for preparing us to be the change we want to see in the world.

Thank you, Madam Speaker and members, today I rise as a proud co author, joint author and chair of the Latino Legislative Caucus in support of HR 23. The principles, the struggles and the values that motivated Cesar Chavez has inspired and motivated the members of the Latino caucus for the last 50 years.

Honoring Cesar Chavez cannot be timelier as many of the Latino caucus Members in the caucus seek support for the recently flooded regions of Santa Cruz and Monterey County, including the inundated farm worker town of Bajaro. Due to the current rains and floods, whether it's fighting for better jobs or better working conditions, improving access to healthcare, access to education, providing services to others, or simply having the respect and dignity of others, Cesar Chavez is a selfless example in the standard we all strive to follow.

When my own father served as the mayor of the City of Coachella, he gave Cesar Chavez the first key to the city, and as a young child, that left a lasting impression on me. Cesar Chavez was and is a symbol of strength and hope in the central valley communities and across our country. Cesar Chavez the farm worker movement the fight for civil rights is deeply rooted in the history of Riverside County in the eastern CoachelLA Valley.

In 1990, my father led the effort to name the Cesar Chavez Elementary School in Coachella. It was the first school in the state to be named in his honor. Cesar Chavez had a tremendous impact in advancing the united farm workers efforts and working to support farm worker rights. During the Delano grape strikes in 1965, Cesar Chavez came to Coachella, where my family joined the boycott and marched alongside and protested for better working conditions for all farm workers.

Chavez reminds us that social responsibility to serve our communities and ensure dignity and respect for all, especially for our most vulnerable, let us continue to honor his legacy by heeding the call to support our most vulnerable demand human dignity for all of our communities. La lucha continua for these reasons, colleagues are respectfully asked for an aye vote for HR 23.

Thank you, Madam Speaker and members, I rise on behalf of the California Legislative Jewish Caucus in support of HR 23. Celebrating the legacy of Caesar Chavez Caesar Chavez worked every day to fight for the dignity of California farm workers. He has endowed California with a robust labor movement and taught us all ideas of great importance in community organizing and supporting our fellow workers. There is a strong Jewish connection to labor movement.

Caesar Chavez and farm workers Jewish trade workers played an integral role in the rise of labor in the late 19th and 20th and the early 20th century. When Caesar Chavez started organizing to fight the oppression of Latino farm workers, many Jewish leaders rose to his side in solidarity. Several orthodox rabbis urged their congregations not to buy nine union grapes, declaring them Oshek unclean because they came from exploited labor.

Rabbi Joseph Glazer, Executive Vice President of Central Conference of American Rabbis, said, until the people who stoop and squat and go through all kinds of hell out there in the fields are treated right, those grapes are trafe, meaning not kosher. Chavez's wife, Helen, once shared a story from when the union was gaining momentum. After opening several donation checks, her sister turned to her and said, hey, sister, look. All these people have the same first name. Rabbi.

The voice of Jewish community leaders were so prevalent in the farm worker movement that Caesar Chavez even began hosting annual Passover seders. Tragically, 17 year old Nan A. Freeman, was the first person to lose their life on a farm worker picket line. A college student from Boston, she traveled to Florida to join a strike and was killed by a truck crashing into the picket line. The Jewish value of fighting for justice has never stopped at the gates of the community.

As we honor Cesar Chavez, we recognize this longstanding Jewish and Latino partnership and commit to continuing to strengthen this coalition in the fight against all oppression. In that spirit, and on behalf of the Jewish caucus, I respectfully urge an aye vote on HR 23.

It is on this day that we recognize the hard work and self sacrifice farm workers go through to feed all the families in our state. We also look back and see the struggle these farm workers faced with discrimination and harsh work environments. Cesar Chavez led the way to bring dignity and protections to our farm workers. In his own words, he said, "we draw our strength from the very despair in which we have been forced to live. We shall endure."

San Diego County, which is home to my district, is the number one producer of avocados in the state and has more small family farms than any other county in the nation. We have many farm workers to thank. Cesar Chavez was a historic leader, and his legacy will live on for decades to come. I urge an aye vote.

Thank you, Madam Chair. On behalf of the California Legislative Black Caucus, we proudly support HR 23.

When you think about the legacy of Cesar Chavez, and most important, the legacy of black and brown alliance, when you think about Cesar Chavez on the West Coast and a Martin Luther King on the East Coast, the fact that the two never met, but they both had shared values, very important shared values that came from the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi, those teachings of nonviolence, those teachings of peaceful resistance, and those teachings of fasting.

And during one of the fasts that Cesar Chavez was doing in 1968 for nonviolence, Martin Luther King wrote him a letter, which is probably the only communication they had. Think about it. Two of the most powerful civil rights leaders we probably ever had in our time only communicated once. And that's a letter from Martin Luther King to Cesar Chavez. And I'll read it to you. "I am deeply moved by your courage and fasting.

As your personal sacrifice for justice through nonviolence, your past and present commitment is eloquent testimony to the constructive power of nonviolent action and the destructive impotence of violent reprisal. Your stand today is as a living example of the Mahatma Gandhi tradition with its great force for social progress and its healing spiritual powers. My colleagues and I commend you for your bravery, salute you for your work against poverty and injustice, and pray for your health and your continuing service as one of the outstanding men of America.

The plight of your people and ours is so grave that we all desperately need the inspiring example and effective leadership you have given. Martin Luther King, Jr. President, Southern Christian Leadership Conference." Just shows you what you can do when you have shared value, when you believe in the same thing, but most important, when you know what you believe in is right. Those two men are shining examples of the power of what communities can do when they come together and move forward.

And so that's why we need to salute Cesar Chavez every day, in every way. Respectfully ask that we pass HR 23.

Good morning, Madam Speaker and members. Today I rise on behalf of the Legislative Women's Caucus to speak in support of House Resolution 23 relative to Caesar Chavez Day. Caesar Chavez worked to create a farm workers union that changed the lives of thousands of workers in the United States. My grandfather being one of those workers who immigrated to the United States as part of the brasero program.

This is something that is near and dear to my heart. I would like us to take a moment to also acknowledge the work of women such as Dolores Huerta, who tirelessly fought alongside Cessa Chavez. Her organizing skills were essential to the growth of the United Farm Workers Union. She negotiated contracts and advocated for safer working conditions. Thanks to their great work, we adopted the slogan "si se puede." The phrase was widely adopted and is still used other movements and in campaigns.

Cesar Chavez increased public awareness of farm worker working conditions today, Dolores continues being a living civil rights icon, fighting for better working conditions for farm workers, organizing people to run for office, and advocating on issues of health, education and economic development. For these reasons, I am pleased to proclaim Cesar Chavez Day and its recognition of the importance in some of our most vulnerable communities. And I therefore respectfully ask for your. aye vote in HR 23.

Thank you, Madam Speaker and members, I rise today to present AJR 1 which condemns Azerbaijan's blockade of Artsakh, also known as Nagorno Karabakh, and urges the United States government to take immediate action to assist the Armenians of Artsakh. The blockade of the Lashin Corridor, the only road connecting Artsakh to Armenia, began in December 12 2022. It has been more than 100 days where 120,000 Armenians, including 30,000 children, have faced life threatening shortages of vital provisions.

I stand with the 120,000 Armenians of Artsakh. The 205,000 Armenians in California and all the members of the Armenian diaspora and request immediate humanitarian assistance to our sisters and brothers in Artsakh. This resolution has bipartisan support, and I urge your I vote on AJR 1 and the role be open for co authors.

Thank you. Madam Speaker and members, I rise today in strong support of AJR 1. I am very proud to represent the largest community of diaspora Armenians in the world, and I want to express to you how important this resolution and how deeply upsetting this issue is to the people in my community. Artsakh has been a traditional part of Armenia going back thousands of years, the churches bear ancient Armenian script. Armenians have lived in this region for thousands of years. Azerbaijan has mounted an unprovoked war against the Armenian people, using the civilians in Artsakh as cannon fodder.

And by cutting off a road, which is the primary way to get all manner of supplies between the mainland and Armenia and into the Armenians living in Artsakh. They have caused a humanitarian crisis in the region for no reason other than to try to remove the Armenians from this area, this historic area. It is a literal war of terror that is happening in this region against civilians.

My community has relatives, family members, people who live part of the time in Artsakh or Armenia, and part of the time in Glendale, Sherman Oaks, Hollywood, all over Los Angeles. And I would say that for those of you who represent areas like Fresno, it's the same situation. So to know that your family members right now are cut off from aid children, literally cut off from being able to be accessed by their parents, you can imagine how incredibly upsetting and tragic this is for so many Californians.

We in California and the United States need to send a very strong message to Azerbaijan and to the world community that this kind of terror against civilians will not be tolerated. With that, I urge an aye vote on AJR 1. Thank you.

And this is an outrage. It needs to be brought to the attention that it is given.

And I stand strongly not only with the author and others who have raised their microphones, but with the hundreds of thousands of Armenians that reside in Central California and in Fresno. This is something vital to them, very important, not only because of what's happening in the country, but it's what is happening in the hearts and the souls of Armenians in Fresno, in Central California. This touches them deeply as well, and it hurts. So thank you for the recognition. I strongly support it.

Thank you, Madam Speaker. Members, today I rise to present SCR six, which proclaims the Legislature's solidarity with the people of Iran. In honor of Women's History Month and no ruse, the persian new year, I want to recognize the extraordinarily brave and remarkable women of Iran who have continued to risk their lives to protest the brutality of the Iranian government and their repression of basic human rights.

On September 16 of last year, 21 year old Masa Amini arrived in Tehran to visit her family, but was subsequently arrested by the Iranian regime's morality police for allegedly wearing her hijab improperly. She was viciously beaten by the police and died while in custody. Masa's murder sparked an incredible uprising involving thousands and thousands of Iranians from all walks of life, teenagers, students, men and women of all ages, taking to the streets to protest the Iranian regime. Iranian government authorities responded with violence.

According to the United Nations, at a minimum, hundreds of people have been killed while protesting. Thousands more have been arrested, many of whom are facing barbaric punishment. But that has not stopped the people of Iran from risking death or imprisonment every day to fight for a better and brighter future. I am really and truly in awe of their bravery. Their courage has inspired people all across the world to protest in solidarity.

Many of these demonstrations of support have taken place right here in California, which has the largest Iranian American population in the nation. I respectfully ask for your. I vote on this important measure and that the first roll be open for co authors today.

Thank you. It's Jim Patterson, not Joe. Just. We get confused, apparently, but that's okay. It seems like today this body has stood to touch significant populations in Central California. First the Artsak and now the Iranian. We have a substantial and significant Iranian population.

I know many of them as friends, and they tell the stories of escaping and coming to the United States, and they look wistfully back to the homeland, hoping and praying that the spark of freedom that is the Iranian people's response to this brutality is the beginning of something significant. There is a significant Iranian population that really are hopeful and see perhaps a day when freedom, democracy, and the opportunity to live their lives as they see fit and so I stand in strong support.

This is an encouragement to the Iranians in California, as was mentioned, a significant population here. And we stand with them not only in their objection to the brutality, but we stand also with them in almost a revolutionary approach to standing for liberty and for freedom, and doing so at the risk of their life. That is heroic. And we stand with them.

Thank you, Madam Speaker. Good morning, Members. Today, I am very pleased to present SCR 41, which honors the life and legacy of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Today we remember, honor, and celebrate a wonderful role model, a pioneering jurist, and a truly phenomenal woman. As we celebrate women's history month, this is an opportunity to lift up those women whose shoulders that we all stand on.

Justice Ginsburg once said women belong in all places where decisions are being made, and I think she would be incredibly proud to see the record number of women serving in this body today. I sometimes think that the legend of the notorious RBG can obscure just how much Justice Ginsburg had to overcome the obstacles that she had to navigate and surmount in order to leave us with this profound legacy.

RBG came of age in a time when women were rarely, rarely, if ever, part of the sphere where laws were made and adjudicated. A time when women were rarely, if ever, seen in the halls of the Capitol. A time when women were rarely, if ever, seen in the halls of the Capitol, sitting around a corporate boardroom or sitting on the federal bench. She was a trailblazer in the truest sense of the word. She graduated first in her class from Columbia Law School in 1959.

She then became the first female Professor to earn tenure at her Alma mater and served as the first female Member of the Harvard Law Review and Columbia Law Review. She was a tenacious attorney dedicated to empowering women who face discrimination, harassments, and barriers to equality and equal participation. She went on to become the second woman appointed to the United States Supreme Court.

She would serve there for 27 years and help shape American law and pave the path for civil and equal rights for women and for all Americans. We all owe her a tremendous debt of gratitude, particularly in light of the last year where we have seen women's fundamental freedoms come under assault across the world and right here in our own country. We must never take for granted the progress that we've made or the gains that we have won. We must continue to fight.

We will not go back. We will not let RBG down. Thank you, and I respectfully ask for your I vote on SCR 41.

Thank you, Madam Speaker. Members, today I rise on behalf of the California Latino Legislative Caucus in support of Senate concurrent Resolution 41. It is an honor to rise and celebrate the legacy of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, a pioneer in some of the most important Supreme Court decisions, from LGBTQ rights to women's rights to Latino rights to human rights.

Justice Ginsburg was the first female Member of the Harvard Law Review, completed law school with a child, co founded the ACLU Women's Rights Project, and was the second woman to ever be appointed to the US Supreme Court. Her legacy is not unlike many Latina attorneys in a male dominated field, oftentimes having to be the first. For many Latina attorneys like myself, prospective lawyers and law students, Justice Ginsburg was and is an inspiration.

Some of Justice Ginsburg's efforts to protect our Latino community occurred in 2019, when she was an important vote in a 54 decision that blocked the Trump Administration from adding citizenship status to the 2020 census. In fact, she was a decisive vote and voice on issues like the Affordable Care Act and same sex marriage, the two landmark decisions that positively impacted millions of Latinos.

One of her most recent efforts before her unfortunate passing included DHS v. Regents of the University of California, where she countered another attack on undocumented students. Ginsburg voted with a majority to impede the Trump administration's efforts to exterminate the DACA program. Her impact on U. S. Law through her opinions and voting record as a Supreme Court justice has benefited the lives of countless Latinos, people of color, women, and our marginalized communities. Her legacy will live on forever. For these reasons, colleagues, I respectfully ask.

Okay, it's my Prop. Thank you, Madam Speaker and Members, I am so proud to rise and present HR 24, commemorating Major League Baseball's 65th opening day in California.

It was in 1958 that the New York Giants and the Brooklyn Dodgers, already linked through over half a century of history, took the leap and began their seasons in the West coast together for the first time in the decades before their arrival, the teams of the Pacific Coast League would play as long as the weather permitted, sometimes from late February to early December. But the arrival of those two teams in 1958 was a critical milestone.

California was finally linked to the rest of the nations in America's favorite pastime it was only four years later when California would become America's most populous state. Today, Major League Baseball teams call California home than any other state. We have five teams that are points of civic pride, bring fans together and inspire young people in our communities. In the north, the teams are the San Francisco Giants and the Oakland Athletics.

In southern Cali, it is home to the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Los Angeles Anaheim Angels, and, way down south, the San Diego Padres. These teams generate billions of dollars to our local and state economy, employ thousands of Californians across our state, sell millions of hot dogs, nachos, peanuts, Micheladas and give back to our communities in multiple ways, including philanthropy, efforts in education, youth sports and little leagues across the state.

Their achievements have contributed to our culture, our californian identity, and countless arguments on where exactly is the divide between northern and Southern California. Often landing somewhere in Fresno, we're all looking at the Central Valley Members. While we may differ on our favorite teams, we can all recognize what they mean to our constituents. I'm very proud that the oldest ballpark west of the Mississippi is Dodger Stadium in my district.

As a little girl from my parents'home in Boyle Heights, I would watch the colors of the sky amid California palm trees, change from hues of pink and orange and blues as the lights of Dodger Stadium turned on. I would listen to the voices of Jaime Harin and Vin Scully and hear the roar of the stadium. Those are the memories that continue to be built for many young people across our state. Throughout the years, California teams have achieved incredible feats, winning 14 World Series championships.

Most recent amid Covid were our boys in blue, the Dodgers in 2020. California teams have also had 37 most valuable player awards and countless all star selections. So today, Members on opening day for America's favorite pastime, we recognize not only those achievements on the field, but baseball fans across our state, those who have invested in our California teams, and the thousands of players, coaches and staff Members who were born in, live in or realize their California dream.

I wanted to touch base with you all today because it's been a great week for San Diego sports fans. The Padres have started off with a great season, and the SDSU Aztecs are headed to the final four. At this rate, it won't be a curveball to see that the Padres secure a historic victory for the city with a World Series win.

Thank you Madam Speaker and Members. As a fan and supporter of the Oakland A's, I rise in support of HR 24. I also want to take a few moments to share some interesting facts about my favorite team. The A's were one of the 8th original American League franchise when the league was born in 1901. Of the 30 teams that make up Major League Baseball, the A's have the third most World Series titles and one of the longest records of success.

The team was founded in Philadelphia in 191 as the Philadelphia Athletics. They moved to Oakland in 1968 and have since been known as the Oakland Athletics. The Oakland A's are simply the A's. In 2002, the A's set the record for most consecutive wins in a single season with 20 and an event that would go on to be pioneering step in the application of saber metrics, aka moneyball, in baseball.

The A's have never been afraid to innovate from moneyball to the first fan wave at a sporting event, drummers and the bleachers and inventing the pitcher closer role. A's hosted the first free game in Major League Baseball, welcoming more than 50,000 fans to the ballpark in 2018 to celebrate the team's 50th anniversary in Oakland. They donate more than $2 million annually back to the community and today at A's season begins. The first pitch of the season marks hope, enthusiasm and team spirit.

I invite and encourage you all to attend an A's game. It's really easy to get there. You can take public transportation. Los Angeles, we will welcome you with open arms and the fans with a tailgater too. There are magnetic pins for each of you. Lastly, take me out to the ballpark. Let's go Oakland A's and join me in supporting HR 24.

I rise today as the proud representative of the home of the San Francisco Giants, Oracle park, and the city and County of San Francisco, which I share with my friend Mr. Ting and a Member of the bipartisan San Francisco Giants caucus I want to thank my colleague from Los Angeles for her leadership and for all of the representatives of the five teams across our state and for reminding everyone that California is truly a baseball state. I also grew up playing baseball.

I played like so many young people across our state. Little league. I actually played on a little league team with my sister that my mom coached and then went on to go to hundreds of games. As a lifelong fan of the San Francisco Giants, I remember one of my fondest memories as a young person was going with my dad and my sister to the World Series, the battle of the Bay at a game before the 1989 earthquake.

The San Francisco Giants are a quintessential San Francisco team, but they have fans that stretch throughout California and beyond. Part of that is because they've demonstrated a commitment to California. The Giants are the only major league team with two minor league affiliates in California, and I want to give a shout out to our AAA Sacramento Rivercats as well as the Single A San Jose Giants.

And though the San Francisco Giants open today in New York, the San Jose Giants open their season at home April 6 against the Fresno Grizzlies, and the Sacramento RiverCats open their season April 4 against the El Paso Chihuahuas. Without a doubt, the Giants are a historic and accomplished team, not only in Major League Baseball, but in all major American sports.

As you heard, they were founded in the late 18 hundreds alongside the Brooklyn Dodgers, and they both came here to California at a time when California was growing. And they put a flag in the ground not only for the future of baseball in our state, but the future of one of the most historic rivalries. This is the 66th year that the Giants have been playing in San Francisco, and over those 65 seasons, more than 125,000,000 fans have attended games at Candlestick Seals Stadium and Oracle park.

One thing that I learned in preparation, and I did not even know this as a Giants fan, the Giants have more wins than any team in the history, not only of baseball, but of all professional sports. They also hold the second highest winning percentage of any major League baseball team. They have the most players who've been inducted to the hall of Fame and some of the most iconic trailblazing players, Orlando Cepeda, Willie Mays, Juan Marishaw, Willie McCovey and Barry Bonds rank as some of our greats.

I should note, and I'm sure my colleague will have a rebuttal here. I also checked our lifetime history of wins and losses against all of the other teams in California. And yes, the Giants do have a lifetime winning record against the Dodgers, a lifetime winning record against the Padres and the Angels. The only team that has us beat is the A's. So the A's have a better record. We won three championships, which brought incredible joy in 20102012 and 2014.

And I also want, and this is true for all of our teams, an incredible commitment to the community. The junior Giants, 23,000 young people participating in their program, including youth scholarships, the Willie Mays scholar program benefiting African American youth in San Francisco. Baseball is truly an American pastime. It's a California pastime.

And thanks to the incredible contributions of the Giants and also the A's, and also the Angels and Padres, and yes, even the Dodgers, we are blessed to have such a strong, successful and enduring baseball state. Happy Baseball day. Opening day. Let's play ball. Thank you again to my colleague. I look forward to having a better record against the Dodgers this year than last year.

Thank you, Madam Speaker and Members, I stand in strong support of HR 24 on behalf of the Los Angeles County Legislative delegation, I want to thank the Member from Boyle Heights for introducing this resolution and for sharing her memories of Dodger Stadium. And I know people may not believe it, but there are public transportation options to Dodger Stadium, especially from Union Station. You can take a shuttle, and there are other ways to get there via public transportation. I strongly urge an I vote. Thank you.

Thank you, Madam Speaker, my fellow Members, today we will be voting on AB 1467, which would establish Navea's Youth Sports Safety act, which expands on current law to ensure our children have life saving automatic external defibrillators, or commonly known as aeDs, at all youth sports events and practices. I am proud to be the author of this Bill, which is named after Navea Johnson. Navea was a 10 year old girl from Waterford, California, who passed away tragically last year at her cheerleading practice.

Had a working aed been readily available, Navea might have been alive today. Today we are joined in the gallery by Navea's family, Tiana, her mother, her grandfather Chuck, her brother Gage, and her grandmother Lori. We are all grateful for your support of AB 1467 and colleagues. Please help me in welcoming them up in the gallery. Thank you.

All right, so this has been a fun day and thank you all for your patience with this as well. As you can see, we have some very special guests here with us in the chamber, both in the back and in the front. And I want to, on behalf of the millions of warriors fans across our state and the many here in this chamber, including my colleague from San Francisco, Mr. Ting, our colleagues from Oakland, the longtime home of the Golden State Warriors.

Ms. Wicks and Ms. Bonta welcome and honor the guests representing the 2022 NBA champion Golden State warriors. We also have here with us behind me, the Larry O'Brien championship trophies from 201520172018 and most recently, 2022. The 2022 NBA championship win is the 7th championship in warriors franchise history.

Golden State has won four NBA titles, all of them here behind us in the span of eight years, becoming the first Bay Area sports team and the fourth NBA team to win at least four championships in a span of eight years. They have the greatest shooter in basketball, Steph Curry, who I'm told wanted to be here but has to prepare for a big win tomorrow night, as well as the second best shooter in history, NBA history, Clay Thompson.

They have incredible ownership, management and staff, and under warriors head coach Steve Kerr, they have won 22 of their 24 playoff series, the highest playoff series winning percentage for a head coach in NBA history. Though each of the four recent championships was memorable in its own right, the 2022 championship was likely the sweetest of them all. As Steph Curry said postgame after the final championship game, this one hit different. This one hit different, for sure.

The warriors started the 202122 season with very distant odds to return to the finals, having just posted the worst record in the NBA in 2019 and still without Clay Thompson, who was injured at the start of last season. Despite all that, they absolutely crushed the competition to their fourth title in eight years, finishing with a 16 and six mark, including a four to two NBA Finals win over the Boston Celtics.

And I hope winning against the Boston Celtics is even something that our Lakers friends here can support. The Golden State warriors are the gold standard for a professional team, and we here in the State Assembly are so proud of them and their success and congratulate them on their historic run and championships. I want to recognize our guests who are here on the floor today. Kalena Azabuke, former player and current broadcaster if you listen to the warriors, that's his voice.

He's the one who is our broadcaster for our team now. Aaron Dangerfield, the Senior Vice President for people and culture Vanessa Gonzalez, the public affairs manager Miguel Guerrero, the senior public affairs coordinator Connor Santel, the public affairs assistant Alex Huerta, the special events representative and Kyle Jefferson, the other special events representative. If you will please give them and the Warriors a huge round of applause and our congratulations on the behalf of the State Assembly.
