  • Celeste Rodriguez

    Legislator

Members, a quorum is present. We asked our guests and visitors in the rear of the chamber and in the gallery to please stand for prayer. Reverend Patty Oshita will offer today's prayer. Reverend Oshita.

  • Patti Oshita

    Person

Please join me in a moment of reflection. My husband has long been a fan of the NBA. Although he has favorite teams, he especially enjoys watching certain players. He says that special players just play the game so well. Just last Saturday, the Golden State warriors retired the jersey of Andre Igoadala.

  • Patti Oshita

    Person

My husband, Coach Bob, had me watch the retirement ceremony with him twice. He was so into it, he was applauding aloud. Coach Bob clearly admired Andre, telling me that he was a key inspiration for the warriors four championships. Why? I asked. There are so many stars on that team.

  • Patti Oshita

    Person

Coach Bob said he was a franchise starter for his whole career, and after being traded to the Warriors, Coach Kerr asked him to come off the bench. He did so without complaint and continued to play his hardest. His talent, experience and intelligence coming off the bench was the reason the warriors motto was Strength in Numbers.

  • Patti Oshita

    Person

During the ceremony, Steph Curry spoke and captured the essence of his retired teammate. In one phrase, he said, Andre sacrificed ego for excellence. Coach Bob has been saying that a lot the last few days, especially while he's watching the news or reading the paper.

  • Patti Oshita

    Person

He says the world will be a better place if we all understood that it's not about me. And I think he's right. It's not just in team sports that we could excel if we sacrificed ego for excellence. The entire world would benefit if we could see that it's not just about me.

  • Patti Oshita

    Person

In the biggest picture, it is about all of humanity. The whole world may not survive if we continue to sacrifice excellence for ego. Namwami Davitsu with kindness and gratitude beyond words.

Thank you, Madam Speaker. Members, if I could have your attention for a few moments. We are going to recognize our retirement of a longtime staff Member. Members, if I could have your attention, please. Members, thank you.

  • James Gallagher

    Legislator

We are going to be recognizing the retirement of a longtime legislative staff Member, dedicated Member of our Republican caucus staff policy staff, William Weber. And it's an honor today to be able to recognize William.

  • James Gallagher

    Legislator

I've been able to work with him my entire tenure, but for many, many years, we have relied on his expertise and advice on a whole host of issues, but especially on the local government and housing committees, where he has always been a strong advocate for the people and for taxpayers and for paying attention to those free market principles that have served us so well in our state, in our country.

  • James Gallagher

    Legislator

William began his work as an intern when he was a student at UC Berkeley. And we share that. Go Bears. You know, Berkeley alumni. From day one, I think when I came in here, William said, all right, you're going to be okay because you're a bear, you know.

  • James Gallagher

    Legislator

And we reminisced over our times at Berkeley, different eras, but not too far apart. Right, William? So William has now worked in the Assembly since 1991, and in his tenure, he has served 20 Republican leaders.

  • James Gallagher

    Legislator

Many of you will know that William, again, is someone who will always be an advocate for the taxpayer, who on the housing and local government committees would always be a voice of fiscal restraint, of free market principles.

  • James Gallagher

    Legislator

And it's no exaggeration for us to say that we will never be able to find someone quite like William Weber. William's analyses and recommendations were known to be driven by principle. He always considered the impact of any legislation to the taxpayer. And I could tell you they're always very thorough.

  • James Gallagher

    Legislator

You know, when you read those analyses by William, there's a lot of case law in there, and there's background and factual analysis that he would bring in different scenarios and different examples that were really invaluable to us.

  • James Gallagher

    Legislator

So over the course of 34 years, Republican Members have always known that William Weber could be relied on to raise a concern about potential tax increases, government overreach, and to offer strong arguments in defense California taxpayers. In fact, William, you have been a champion for limited government and protecting property rights, and I thank you for that, sir.

  • James Gallagher

    Legislator

William is also joined today by his wife, Amy Mitchell, their daughter Sophie, who was born when William worked at the caucus and is now a junior at Boston University. So thank you, Amy.

  • James Gallagher

    Legislator

We want to thank you as well for sharing William with us and also putting up with an incredibly demanding schedule here in the Legislature, especially come end of session and otherwise. Now that he won't be analyzing bills, I know William is looking forward to more time hiking, playing tennis, Stephen Sondheim musicals and original Hawaii Five O episodes.

  • James Gallagher

    Legislator

Much luck to you and best to you my friend in your retirement. We will miss you William and please enjoy your much earned retirement. Thank you.
