Bio

Shirley Weber, 77, was elected to the state Assembly in 2012. In 2020, Governor Gavin Newsom appointed her to be secretary of state to replace Alex Padilla, whom Newsom appointed to the U.S. Senate. She was elected Secretary of State in 2022. Born to sharecroppers in Hope, Arkansas, Weber received her bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degrees from UCLA. She was a professor at San Diego State University for 40 years. She also was a board member and chair of the San Diego Unified School District. She has two children, one of whom is California Democratic Sen. Akilah Weber Pierson.

Job Description

The secretary of state oversees California elections, provides the public with campaign finance and lobbying information, maintains business filings, commissions notaries and preserves historical records. The secretary manages the state archives and registries for domestic partners and advanced health care directives. The office has about 760 employees and a budget of $203 million.
