SUMMARY: Designates the month of November 2019 as Military and Veteran Appreciation Month to honor the sacrifices that have been made by honorable men and women in our nation through their service to this great nation and our great state. Specifically, this resolution makes the following legislative findings:
- The United States of America has called on its men and women in uniform to protect our national security, to advance national interests, and to preserve our rights and freedoms; and, since this country’s birth, more than 45,000,000 people have fought for this country in its Armed Forces.
- The brave men and women of the United States Army, the United States Marine Corps, the United States Navy, the United States Air Force, and the United States Coast Guard have fought with valor, gallantry, and distinction to protect our country.
- There are currently 32 active duty military installations located in California, which is home to an estimated 190,000 active duty and reserve service members. Today, California is home to nearly two million veterans of the United States military, more than any other state in the nation.
- The armistice that ended the conflict on the Western Front during World War I was signed November 11, 1918, and the occasion was commemorated as Armistice Day; and, this day was renamed Veterans Day in 1954, with President Dwight D. Eisenhower proclaiming, “On that day let us solemnly remember the sacrifices of all those who fought so valiantly, on the seas, in the air, and on foreign shores, to preserve our heritage of freedom, and let us reconsecrate ourselves to the task of promoting an enduring peace so that their efforts shall not have been in vain.”
- On Veterans Day, we recognize the men and women of our Armed Forces, past and present, who have valiantly defended these values through our nation’s history. We also remember and pay tribute to the millions of patriots whose courage and sacrifice have secured our freedom, beginning with those who suffered through the harsh winter at Valley Forge to those today who keep the peace and defend our values around the globe.
