This resolution declares the month of September 2017 as Kinship Care Month.

ANALYSIS: This resolution makes the following legislative findings:

California is proud to recognize the children in kinship care and their grandparents and other relatives who raise them and who ensure their safety, promote their well-being, and establish stable households for these young people to thrive.
Kinship care can be an informal or formal arrangement in which a grandparent or other relative cares for a child for either a short-term or a long-term period of time when a parent is unable to care for the child.
One in 10 children will live with a grandparent or other relative caregiver during his or her childhood.
Kinship care provides the best opportunity to retain a child’s cultural heritage and community ties.

This resolution declares the month of September 2017 as Kinship Care Month.

We are proud to support ACR-123, which recognizes the hard work and sacrifice these families make every day by declaring the month of September 2017 as Kinship Care Month. In doing so, California will be joining 8 other states from across the country who have taken similar action.”
