Comments
According to the author,
There is a need to celebrate the accomplishments of women who have paved the way in politics and government. In addition, it must be recognized that a gender gap continues to exist, especially in the state of California.
While the twentieth century was a pivotal time for women entering politics and government, women remain largely underrepresented in California. According to a 2017 report by the Center for American Women and Politics, only 22.5% of the California State Legislature is comprised of women elected officials. When compared to other state legislatures in the country, California is ranked 30th in female representation. Considering that nearly 50.3% of Californians are women, there is still work to be done.
The purpose of this resolution is to celebrate women in public office, bring awareness to the gender disparity that remains, and to inspire young women to become more civically engaged.
