AB 1004: Secretary of State: voter information Internet Web site.

Existing law provides that the Secretary of State is the chief elections officer of the state and requires the Secretary of State to see that elections are efficiently conducted and that state election laws are enforced. The Secretary of State is required to post on his or her Internet Web site specified information describing, among other things, services that are available to the proponents of a proposed initiative measure and to post a certified statement of the vote from compiled election results.

This bill would require the Secretary of State, by, January 1, 2020, to establish an Internet Web site that displays the names and contact information, including the phone number, email address, and office address, of each voters specified local, state, and federal elected officials, which would be displayed upon a voter submitting his or her address information on the Internet Web site. The bill would require the Secretary of State to include a hyperlink to the Internet Web site on its main Internet Web site homepage. The bill would require the Secretary of State to finance the new Internet Web site with state and local funds. The bill would provide that it shall not be construed to prohibit the Secretary of State from exercising his or her authority under existing law to implement the bills provisions.
