Comments
According to the author, “This resolution recognizes the invaluable contributions women have made to the scientific and global economy. Biases against women in research and industry fields persist to this day, and we need to encourage gender parity at all levels of employment. Organizations and institutions competitively benefit from providing a supportive workplace environment for women to excel, expand their scope of research, and provide different perspectives.”

ARGUMENTS IN SUPPORT: In support, Bayer states,
While Bayer is proud of its record of employing women in STEM fields, we realize that much more needs to be done to ensure women are more fully represented in STEM careers. In fact, a survey of female and minority STEM professionals commissioned by Bayer in 2010, found that more than three-quarters (77 percent) of those polled say significant numbers of women and underrepresented minorities are missing from the U.S. STEM workforce today because they were not identified, encouraged or nurtured to pursue STEM studies early on. Further, nearly two-thirds (63 percent) believe that underrepresentation by women and minorities in STEM threatens the United States' global competitiveness.
Increasing the number of women and underrepresented minorities in STEM careers and academia will require a coordinated and sustained effort by policymakers, educators, and the business community. Bayer is committed to doing its part and appreciates the California Legislature's attention to this issue as demonstrated by this resolution and other policy proposals to improve STEM education in the State.
