ARGUMENTS IN SUPPORT: The author states:
California is home to more immigrants than any other state in the nation, to include an Arab American population of approximately 800,000. For over a century, Arab Americans have been making valuable contributions to virtually every aspect of American society including medicine, law, business, technology, government, and culture. Since migrating to the United States, men and women of Arab descent have shared their rich culture and traditions with neighbors and friends, while also setting fine examples as model citizens and public servants.
California’s Arab American citizens and their forbears have enriched our state and its communities with their strong work ethic, dedication to education, and diversity in faith and creed, while enthusiastically embracing the American spirit of opportunity that makes our nation free and prosperous.
Despite a history of contributions and achievements, the positive place of Arab Americans in American life has often remained neglected or distorted by misunderstanding and bigotry, which has contributed to a recent rise in anti-Arab sentiment. During this current, challenging period in America’s politics, Arab American communities in this state and throughout the nation find themselves facing civil rights abuses, harmful stereotyping, harassment, and bullying, all of which must be clearly renounced and forcefully combated.
It is in that spirit that SCR 123 celebrates California’s Arab Americans, as well as educating the public about their contributions to our society, and their desire for a peaceful and diverse society.
